Keep a small case in the boat or the truck for the things that must stay dry, and a big one for the rest. Keep them in a small plastic tray and cut one rectangular pocket for the tray itself.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n<p>If you want clean, cut-to-shape pockets instead of pluck cubes, a solid pad works better. Store the foam layers at home and use the case as a bare tub for wet gear.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Open it the same day.<\/strong> A sealed case with wet gear inside is a closed, warm, damp box. Empty it, rinse it and leave the lid open to dry.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<p>Bait is the same idea with a stricter time limit. A sealed case contains the mess and the smell in transit, but do not leave it closed overnight.<\/p>\n\n<h2>How do you keep the case sealing season after season?<\/h2>\n\n<p>Salt does more damage to cases than impact does. Five minutes of care after each trip beats any spec on the box.<\/p>\n\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Rinse the outside with fresh water<\/strong> after every saltwater trip, latches included.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Wipe the gasket with a clean, damp cloth.<\/strong> Run a finger all the way around to feel for sand, salt crystals or a bit of line stuck in the channel.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Check that the gasket sits in its groove.<\/strong> If a section has lifted, press it back down before you latch the lid.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Work the latches.<\/strong> Rinse them, then open and close them a few times so salt does not dry inside the mechanism.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Store it open or loosely latched<\/strong> at home. Leaving a gasket compressed for months takes some of the spring out of it.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Do not block the pressure valve.<\/strong> Keep tape, stickers and stacked gear off it.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Test before the season.<\/strong> Latch the empty case, hold it under water in a tub for a minute, and look for beading inside. Better to find a problem in the driveway than offshore.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<h2>What goes in the case and what stays out?<\/h2>\n\n<p>A sealed case is worth using on the things that end your day when they get wet. Everything else can live in a bag.<\/p>\n\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Always inside:<\/strong> phone, keys, wallet, fishing license and permits, camera, handheld GPS or VHF, spare batteries, fish scale, headlamp, medication.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Worth protecting:<\/strong> reels between trips, expensive lures and jig heads, leader spools, hooks and anything steel that rusts on contact with salt air.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Leave out:<\/strong> anything already soaking wet that you plan to store long term, and loose hooks without a tray.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<p>The 10.62&#8243; case&#8217;s two padlock-adaptable hasps also let you lock it when it stays in a truck bed or a rental boat.
